Peter Rowland

Peter Rowland is a wildlife conservationist, educator, nature photographer and author, and has traveled extensively throughout Australia as a biodiversity consultant.

Although born in Australia in the late 1960s, Peter spent the majority of his childhood in the woodlands and coastal regions in the south of England. It was here that he developed his great love for wildlife in general, but his main passion was for birds. When Peter was around 8 or 9 he constructed a bird hide in his back garden and would sit for hours watching the birds, and occasional squirrel, that came to the feeders he had placed nearby, and photographing them with his instamatic camera. Fast forward to the present day and Peter is still photographing wildlife but, today, he uses Nikon digital SLR bodies and a variety of Nikkor professional lenses.

Peter moved with his parents back to Australia in 1982, and in 1983 did work experience in the bird department at the Australian Museum in Sydney. He continued to work as a volunteer there during school and university holidays and ended up working for the bird, reptile, mammal and terrestrial ecology departments over a period that spanned 21 years. During his time at the museum, Peter had the privilege of working with, and learning from, some of Australia's leading scientific experts. It was during this time that Peter wrote his first two books on the birds of Australia (The Photographic Guide to Birds of Australia and The Green Guide to Birds of Australia), as well as researching and publishing several scientific articles on the birds of both Australia and New Guinea and contributing written and photographic material to many other wildlife books and magazines. In 1998, Peter was the recipient of a Whitley Award for Literature, for his contribution to the Green Guide series.

Peter has since written a number of other titles, including: The Bowerbirds (CSIRO Publishing), and Naturalists Guide to Reptiles of Australia, Naturalists Guide to Mammals of Australia, Naturalist Guide to Dangerous Creatures of Australia, Naturalists Guide to Frogs of Australia, Australia's Birdwatching Megaspots and Naturalist's Guide to Insects of Australia (Beaufoy Publishing). Peter is currently working on other titles in the Naturalists Guide's series and writes a regular 'Bird Nerd' column for Australian Geographic magazine.
