The appearance of these insects can vary. Typically, male Spur-legged Stick Insects (Didymuria violescens) are brown but can be green in colour, with brown to purplish hindwings, and have 3 conspicuous spurs on their rear limbs. Females are larger and more robust than males, and are typically green but can be brown, with whitish to pink hindwings.
They are found in south-eastern Australia, from south-eastern QLD to central Vic and Tas. They inhabit a wide variety of wooded habitats, and feed on gum leaves, particularly those of Mountain Ash and Alpine Ash. Occasionally, these insect populations grow so large that they defoliate entire trees. Males are capable of flight but, if disturbed, will typically drop to ground and remain motionless, feigning death.
This species features in my book "A Naturalist's Guide to the Insects of Australia", which I co-authored with Rachel Whitlock in 2018. The 2nd edition of this title is due for release in October 2022. This image was taken in my front garden a few years prior after I found this individual clinging to the outside of my car after driving home one day.
