While gathering images for the second edition of the Naturalist's Guide to the Insects of Australia, I had the opportunity to visit a friend's wildlife refuge in the Warby Ranges, Victoria Australia.
There were a number of these wasps in various locations around the property, and I was delighted to be able to get some images of this species doing a range of daily activities.
The body of the Mud Dauber is yellowish to orange and black. First abdominal segment long and slender, forming thin, waist-like petiole.
It is found in suitable habitats throughout
Australia, and wider spread in Pacific, where it is both naturally occurring and introduced.
Within its range, the Mud Dauber occurs
in a variety of wooded and urban habitats, where adults feed on nectar and honeydew. The female gathers wet clay to construct nests that contain several cells, each of which contains an egg and a paralysed invertebrate, such as a spider or caterpillar, on which the larva feed once hatched. After consuming its meal, larva pupates within the mud cell before
emerging.
