While gathering images for the 2nd edition of the Naturalist's Guide to the Insects of Australia (due out in October 2022), I had the opportunity to visit a friend's wildlife refuge in the Warby Ranges, Victoria Australia.
There were a number of these flies (or possibly the same one!) in various locations around the property, and one would land near me when I was working as if to check me out and see what I was doing. They rarely stayed long enough for me to grab my camera to get a picture, and if they did hang around only one image could be taken before they flew off again. The pressure was on to get a good image in the limited time I had there, and it seemed that I was destined to go away without a good enough shot. Finally though, my luck changed on the second last day and I was rewarded with a few pleasing shots.
The Giant Yellow Robber Fly is a large, grey and black fly, with bright yellow hairs on upper surface of its abdomen and greyish-brown wings extending beyond the tip of abdomen.
The species has been recorded over much of Australia, including Qld, NSW, Vic, SA and southern WA.
It occurs in forests, woodland and gardens, where its loud, buzzing flight often betrays its
presence when not perched on side of tree, branch or vegetation. It preys on other insects, including beetles and other flies, which are typically caught in mid-air using its strong claws. The helpless victim is then pierced
with the robber fly's proboscis and injected with toxic saliva and digestive enzymes before the body contents are sucked out.
