The European (or German) Wasp is black with broad yellow bands and an almost hairless, elongated abdomen.
The species is native to Europe, north Africa and Asia. It was introduced into southern Australia, and is now widespread from southern Qld in the east to Perth, WA, in the west, and in Tas..
It is most commonly encountered in cooler, moist areas, where it builds a papery nest in a crevice or tree hollow, generally close to the ground, but nests have also been found in the roof space of dwellings.
Food consists of insects, carrion and sweet, sugary substances, including fruit and honeydew, as well as manufactured cakes and sugary drinks, and it readily crawls inside soft drink cans or bottles to access the contents. Humans are at risk of being stung in the mouth when they drink from a container with a wasp inside. Stings anywhere in the body cause pain, inflammation and itchiness, and allergic reactions occur in some people.
