The fur of the European Rabbit is typically grey-brown above and whitish grey below, but some individuals are light yellow-brown, red-brown, black or, rarely, white. Ears and hindlegs long; tail short and fluffy. Underside of feet well furred; claws long and straight. Males may have a slightly broader head. Young rabbits have white star on forehead. The similar European
Brown Hare (Lepus europaeus) is larger with longer ears, longer hindlegs and running style; European Rabbits run with tail up (showing white), while hares run with tail down.
Wild populations of rabbits were introduced
into Australia in the mid to late 1800s and the species is now widespread throughout all but monsoonal tropics.
It occurs in a variety of habitats, including open
grassland, pasture and arid areas, but marked preference for habitats with low vegetation, deep well-drained soils and sufficient refuge sites, such as dense thickets or fallen logs. Groups typically construct large, deep underground warrens (typically larger in more open country), used for breeding and shelter from higher temperatures, although may live
above ground if sufficient dense groundcover exists. Herbivorous, eating a wide range of plant matter, but selectively grazes on the most nutritious parts. Generally gains sufficient moisture from food sources, but access to water is required in arid areas.
