Common Methanas or Methana Cockroaches (Methana marginalis) are native to eastern NSW and Eastern QLD and were introduced to Norfolk island. As adults they are typically dark brown to reddish brown with a conspicuous, U-shaped, broad cream edges along the sides of their body and wings.
As terrestrial and arboreal insects, Common Methanas shelter under bark and other vegetation in native bushlands, urban gardens and, sometimes, enter houses.
I often encounter individuals of this species in my own garden, and the individual in this image was actually found wandering around my home office. This species features in my book ‘A Naturalist’s Guide to the Insects of Australia’, which I co-authored with Rachel Whitlock in 2018. The 2nd edition of this title is due for release in October 2022.
