The gardens at our small suburban property are supporting more native fauna each year. One of the more numerous native bee species is the Blue-banded Bee (Amegilla sp.). These beautiful bees are an absolute joy to watch as they move between the native flowers and the flowers of the various fruits, vegetables and herbs we have growing.
Adults have black abdomen with bright metallic blue hairy bands; the remainder of body is covered in gold-and-white, furry hair, including the tops of the legs. The eyes are large and greenish-yellow. The male is distinguished from the female by an extra abdominal band and lack of black on clypeus (part of face near mandibles). The wings smokey-brown and
The species occurs in tropical
and subtropical regions of Australia, and has been reported from parts of South-east Asia.
It lives in forests, woodlands and heaths, including in urban areas. Females inhabit burrows in soil, typically in banks of rivers or streams, or in loose joints in brick walls, and often in close association with others. It obtains
pollen from flowers by ‘buzz’ pollination,
using sonic vibrations to release pollen.
Individuals are capable of stinging but less aggressive than other bees.
