Although born in Australia in the late 1960s, Peter Rowland spent the majority of his childhood in the woodlands and coastal regions in the south of England. It was here that he developed his great love for wildlife in general, but his main passion was for birds. When Peter was around 8 or 9 he constructed a bird hide in his back garden and would sit for hours watching the birds, and occasional squirrel, that came to the feeders he had placed nearby, and photographing them with his instamatic camera. Fast forward to the present day and Peter is still photographing wildlife but, today, he uses three Nikon digital SLR bodies and a variety of professional lenses.

Peter moved with his parents back to Australia in 1982, and in 1983 did work experience in the bird department at the Australian Museum in Sydney. He continued to work as a volunteer there during school and university holidays and ended up working for the bird, reptile, mammal and terrestrial ecology departments, when commercial funding was available, for a period spanning 20 years. During his time at the museum, Peter had the privilege of working with, and learning from, some of Australia's leading scientific experts. It was during this time that Peter wrote his first two books on the birds of Australia (The Photographic Guide to Birds of Australia and The Green Guide to Birds of Australia), as well as researching and publishing several scientific articles on the birds of both Australia and New Guinea, and contributing written and photographic material to many other wildlife books and magazines. In 1998, Peter was the recipient of a Whitley Award for Literature, for his contribution to the Green Guide series. His most recent book is The Bowerbirds, which is available as an e-book through CSIRO Publishing.

In 2000, Peter started an environmental consultancy company and photographic library (Kape Images) with his wife, Kate, and has traveled extensively throughout Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Hong Kong, Singapore and the United Kingdom, studying and photographing wildlife.

Kape Images is still a family-owned and operated company that now has over 30,000 images in its library. If you cannot find what you are looking for on this site, please contact Peter.
